Samsung refrigerator not cooling (freezer still cold): causes & fixes
When the freezer is fine but the fresh-food section is warm, the problem is usually airflow or defrost, not the compressor.
Check yourself first (free)
- Power-cycle: unplug 5 minutes. Many Samsung models then run a test/defrost cycle.
- Listen for the fan inside the fridge section with the door switch pressed. No air, or a scraping/clicking sound, points to ice on the fan.
- Look for frost on the rear panel of the fridge or freezer, or water/ice under the crisper drawers.
- Clear the vents: food pushed against the back wall blocks airflow.
- Clean the condenser coils and check the bottom-rear fan, especially in hot Alabama garages.
Most common causes
- Evaporator iced over from a failed defrost heater, defrost sensor or board. A manual defrost (unplug 24–48 hrs, doors open, towels down) restores cooling for a while, which confirms the diagnosis.
- Evaporator fan motor failed or blocked by ice.
- Damper or air duct frozen (models that feed the fridge from the freezer).
- Ice-maker compartment frost leaks on French-door models, a well-known Samsung complaint.
When to call a pro
If cooling dies again a week or two after a manual defrost, the defrost system needs parts. That's a normal mid-cost repair. Ask whether the tech services Samsung regularly, since some shops avoid it because of parts lead times.
